This private house has been designed to sensitively respond to the local historic buildings and ‘village’ whilst meeting the needs and aspirations of a growing family. The new owner of the famed Olympic Studios has received planning permission to build a new family home with surrounding gardens on land next to the Studios.
This new building will be set within a series of walled gardens with a very low profile from the street. The gardens will be linked front and back through the house and these are in turn linked by a number of smaller courtyard gardens. Rodrigues Associates has the challenge of meeting requirements for the design but also those for the Environment Agency which has strict flood guidelines for the area. Design must provide for flood water levels to be at existing ground levels thus requiring the basement and sunken garden to be water retaining, whilst preventing uplift from any rising water levels.
